If Sony surprised everyone by presenting the Sony Xperia Z with its ability to withstand water, the Japanese automaker has now taken a step further with a new handset, with quad-core processor at 1.5 GHz, which can be submerged up to 1 , 5 meters for half an hour. With this, Sony claims the first smartphone that can take photos and record HD video underwater.
In realiad, the Xperia ZR is just a little more water resistant the flagship of Sony (Xperia Z), the latter reaching a meter deep. Of course, in neither case are prepared to work with salt water.
The big difference between the Xperia ZR and Z, at least in terms of underwater photography is concerned, is that the ZR has a dedicated camera button. And, because the phone’s touch screen does not work under the water, you need a physical button on the camera to take pictures and video during the dive, while the Z should start recording from the surface.
The waterproofing is becoming a more common on high-end phones. Besides Sony phones, the flagship of Huawei (Ascend D2) is also resistant to water and dust, like the Motorola Razr series.
As for the technical specifications, the ZR Xperia is not far behind. It has a 1.5 GHz processor quad-core, Adreno 320 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 13-megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera, 8GB of storage, a microSD card slot and NFC support. The screen is a 4.6-inch 720p.
